A Good Uncle

Two years ago, when both of my kids were getting ready to go to college in Virginia, Maddie for her second year and Liam for his first, Jim contacted me to offer his help carrying all their stuff.  Jim was emphatic in his offer, saying,"I can't help financially, but this is how I can help."  He was great in organizing and loading in both cars and getting us on the way. Jim also took the lead in getting a good route to avoid as much traffic as possible.

Liam went with Jim, and got to Virginia first.  Maureen, Maddie, and I came upon them napping in the car.  Again, Jim organized the unloading.  I'm sure he felt like he was in the Guards again. "Tote that bale, lift that box!"  We gave him a tour of the college, and he was pretty impressed.

We spent a several nights in a hotel and had some good talks about family and all.  Maddie & Liam heard many stories for the first time.  We drove home, staying pretty close and made several stops together.

When time came to pick them up, Jim again wanted to help, but the previous ride to Virginia was hard on him.  Maddie had brought a car to Virginia after Christmas, so they didn't need a ride this time.  Jim offered to be our guide at Gettysburg.  Jim chose a campground right down the street from the Visitor Center.  He researched all about the National Park and monuments, scheduled tours and such.  Maureen & I spent two days with him and took a guided tour of the battlefield.  We had a great time reconnecting as brothers once more.

Maureen and I then traveled to Virginia while Jim continued his tour of Gettysburg.  Two days later, we all returned to Gettysburg.  Camping was a much better way to be together.  Cooking and eating together, sitting around a campfire, and talking. Maddie & Liam heard all about our parent and grandparents and our Irish heritage.

The first trip was great for Maddie & Liam, the second was even better.  They have wonderful memories of their uncle they will cherish forever.
