Of Woburn, formerly of Cambridge, February 22, 2017. Mary was born in Cambridge on Wednesday, May 14, 1924, to the late William J. and Mary A. (Egan) Murphy. Mary, an only child, married the love of her life, William J. O’Brien, the youngest of nine, on June 9, 1951, at Saint Mary’s Church in Cambridge.
Mary lived, worked, married, and raised her daughters the entirety of her life in her beloved hometown of Cambridge. Mary worked at Harvard University from 1960 until she retired to spend time with her cherished granddaughters in 1986. Mary worked at several Cambridge companies, beginning in high school, leading up to her career at Harvard.
Mary is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, William "Joe" “Rebel” O’Brien. As well, her adoring Sons-in-Law Richard “Ricky” Coppenrath, and Gerald A. “Jerry” Wall. Mary leaves behind her dearly loved daughters Diane Wall of Wollaston, and Patricia Coppenrath and her companion Christopher Kasabian of Woburn. Devoted grandmother of Lauren Malone and her husband Sean of Wilmington, and Caitlin Coppenrath and her fiancé Hector Flores of Woburn. Cherished great grandmother of Declan Malone and Adriana Flores. Mary is also predeceased by her loving family and countless friends, to include her Sisters-in-Law and Brothers-in-Law: Anna and Gerry Walsh, Marie and Dan Lucey, Mike and Ann O’Brien, Jim and Sally “Dilly” O’Brien, Tom and Mary O’Brien, Mercedes “Mertie” and Bill Goode, Loretta and Frank Melargni, and Kate and Thomas “Toddy” Collins. She is survived by her many loving nieces and nephews. Mary will be sorely missed by all, to include her “little buddy” Clancy.
Mary loved her family, her friends, her City. She was a city girl at heart, to the end.
The Funeral for Mary will be held from the Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Mass Ave, NORTH CAMBRIDGE on Tuesday at 9am. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in The Church of Saint Peter, 100 Concord Ave, Cambridge, at 10am. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8. Parking is available at Pemberton Farms. Burial in Cambridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary Margaret may be made to The Caroll Center For the Blind, 770 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458.
