Obituary for Andrew Sluz

Andrew Sluz
Andrew Sluz passed away suddenly on November 28, 2017, at the age of 71.

Born in Varel, Germany, Andy moved to the US in 1949 and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1964. He earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts University and his Masters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He next took a job at the US Department of Transportation, where he worked for 37 years.

Andy was renowned for his easygoing coaching style in both baseball and soccer and his pancake breakfasts, attended by throngs of neighbors, teammates and family friends. Andy was well known for being laid back (to the point of falling asleep at family gatherings), kind (he long ago insisted on a "catch and release" policy with spiders, squirrels and fish) and generous (even beyond the batches and batches of pancakes). He enjoyed golfing, but was not too worried about course etiquette. His brother Alex said he "couldn't be more obtrusive if he rode a horse around the links." He enjoyed the outdoors, but more in the "sitting in a lawn chair to make sure the White Mountains don't move" than exercising or doing yardwork. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, especially when it involved adding his secret ingredient (bourbon). Most recently, he could be found at the hockey rinks of eastern Massachusetts (all of them), buying things he didn't need at Costco (all the time) and enjoying card games - from going way across any line in Cards Against Humanity to playing a mean game of bridge with his regular crew. HIs signature seven-layer dip will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Muriel (Reynolds), sons Erik (and wife, Heidi) and Christopher (and wife, Bronwyn), and daughter Alyssa (and husband, Joel Beck). He also leaves grandchildren Viktoria, Alec, Matthew, Drew, Kurt, Trystan and Johnny, and Brothers Alex and George Sluz.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Andrew may be made to Doctors Without Borders, 333 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10001-5004. A service to celebrate the life of Andrew will be held on December 2, 2017 from 3:00pm - 8:00pm at Tufts Alumnae Lounge, 40 Talbot Avenue, Somerville MA, 02144.
