Obituary for Carmelie Bonnet

Carmelie (Zèlnite) Bonnet, age 62 of Cambridge, MA, peacefully passed away on June 9th, 2018 at West Newton Health Care surrounded by her two children, her brothers and sisters, and friends. Carmelie was born on august 29, 1955 in the town of Moron, Haiti. She was the fifth of ten children of Lucienne George Bonnet and the late Tiburce Bonnet. She was a single mother survived by her two loving children, Nouchecar and Bessena Cabe.

Carmelie was a great professional seamstress, a prime artificial florist decorator and designer, a remarkable teacher and a phenomenal professional baker. At a very young age, Carmelie had shown great interests into learning how to sew. She would constantly hand stitched her own clothes and some of her younger siblings and friends when ruptured. Seeing such high interests, her parents connected her with one of the best tailors in town. There she began her apprenticeship and learned a great deal about the profession. She went later to have her own sewing machine only a few months into her apprenticeship. Over a year later, she had started to repair and design beautiful dresses for others in her town. She shortly became very well known for her early meticulous designs and unique styles.

Later, on her late twenties, Carmelie moved from Moron to Port-au-Prince in pursuit of furthering along her professional career. Upon her arrival in Port-au-Prince, she attended the Professional School of Virtuous Women, which was an elite school to learn clothing designs and sewing, artificial flower designs and arrangements, and culinary. Five years later, she graduated from her school, attained her degree; had her own cook book; her own clothing design sketch book, and pastry book. She then went on to opening her own professional school called “Couture Moderne (Modern Clothing Design)”at her house in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince. Carmelie would teach classes to younger ladies on sewing and baking who are soon to become professionals.

On her mid-thirties, Carmelie had her two children, Nouchecar Cabe and Bessena Cabe. Carmelie and her two children immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 2004, with the assistance of her mother Lucienne G. Bonnet, in search of a better life and education for both of her children. Carmelie had lived in Cambridge, MA up to 2013 and later move to West Newton. Carmelie loved her children very much and would do whatever she could to ensure that they achieve their dreams.

Migrating to the US served as a challenge for Carmelie given the language barrier. However, she did not let that stop her from trying. Carmelie attended, at the Cambridge Learning Center, English as a Second Language (ESL) course and worked tirelessly to learn English. She did not let her profession waned either. She continued to sew for her friends and some family members.

In 2006, Carmelie was later diagnosed with breast cancer, which had an impact on her whole family. She went through multiple procedures and surgeries and doctor visits. Five years later she survived and was cleared of breast cancer.

In all her life, Carmelie had her faith in God and was a great servant of such. She loved her family and her two children more than one can imagine. She had a big welcoming heart. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members and friends. Her charm and smile can enlightened a room at any given moment. She was a very courageous and an honest woman with principle in her all life. Her love for her family could not be mistaken.

After a wonderful 62 years of life on this earth as a faithful Christian, God has called Carmelie home. She is no longer with us today, but her words, wisdom, and prayers will stay with us forever and ever more. May her soul rest in peace. We will surely Miss You Carmelie.
