Obituary for Richard Varella

Richard Varella
Richard Varella, 76 of Brighton, MA and West Palm Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in Florida with his family by his side. Beloved husband of 48 years to Ellen Varella (Foster). Devoted father of Sara Varella Ringos and her husband Christos Ringos of Somerville, and Ann Marie Varella Snell and her husband Jason Snell of Somerville. Adoring grandfather to Colton Snell, Victoria Ringos and Cooper Snell. Dear brother to Dorothea Lebrecht and John Varella. Loving son of the deceased, Marion Varella. Richard is also survived by many extended family members and cherished friends, who will always remember him as a gentle soul.

Dick was a loyal, kind and affectionate husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. Earlier this month he lost his nearly sixty-year battle, which began with Polio in the 1950’s. He was completely dedicated to his family and friends. His legacy will live on as Dick truly understood the true meaning of family and he led by example. He lived a long, happy life with his family. His passions were celebrating life and enjoying the horseman’s life. Dick traveled the world and enjoyed the warmer climates of the Palm Beaches in the last, great years of his life.

Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the Story Chapel, Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge from 9:00-11:00am. Additionally, a Prayer Service will be held at 11:00am, immediately followed by the burial. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.
